I believe in the musical knowledge and instincts of each student. As a teacher, I strive to recognize and enhance these abilities. My experience performing and teaching in Colombia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United States has given me the perspective needed to make this goal a reality. Through these experiences, I have developed the ability to adapt to each student and help them become their own teacher.
My priority is for students to find the joy of playing and making music with the flute. I am convinced that building a solid technical foundation from the beginning is essential to experiencing this joy. Each of my lessons focuses on sound quality and projection. To help achieve the best sound quality, I start my students with isolated exercises, including tone studies, scales, and arpeggios. These specialized studies help develop breath control, articulation, dynamic control, refined intonation, embouchure flexibility, and precise fingering, among others.
In addition to the flute-specific exercises, I believe that a student’s overall well-being and health will have a tremendous impact on their playing. My experience as a certified yoga instructor has made me aware of the important role that relaxation and good posture play in a student’s success. These are principles I hope my students apply in both their practice and everyday life.
Finally, I would like to encourage all students to give their best. As with the development of any skill, learning the flute requires dedication and patience. As a student myself, I understand the challenges and frustrations that can arise when learning the flute. By overcoming these challenges, I have learned to inspire and motivate my students throughout their studies.
