- Musicology – Analysis: Anton Weber. Op. 27
This is an analysis of the second movement of Op. 27, written in 1936 by Anton Webern. Many music theorists have tried to explain the creative process behind this piece. In this work, I will share my own interpretation. To follow my reasoning, the reader will need the score, the matrix, Table 1, and Table 2.
This thesis investigates whether vowel articulation affects flute sound through experiments and acoustic analysis. It continues a pilot project, “Acoustics and Perception of Speech Sound on the Flute,” where participants tried to distinguish vowel shapes while playing. Here, a professional flutist recorded A=440 Hz across three octaves, shaping the mouth for specific monophthongs. The first set used peripheral vowels from the IPA, and the second set contrasted vowels by jaw height, producing thirty samples. Data were analyzed using spectral analysis, overall loudness, and spectral prominences to examine how flute sound behaves.
Results showed no consistent timbre differences. Spectral changes were small, unrelated to vowel articulation, and random within a range. This suggests phonetic vowels do not govern flute acoustics; other factors dominate.
